The most persuasive summer clothes rarely arrive shouting. They appear at lunch slightly oversized, sleeves rolled with mathematical care, collar open exactly far enough, and somehow make every complicated outfit in the room look anxious.
The white shirt works over a swimsuit with flat leather sandals and a proper watch. It meets a long skirt, sculptural earrings and a bag too small to carry anyone else’s problems. On the North Shore, it belongs beneath a navy blazer when dinner moves from the terrace to the dining room.
Fabric matters. Cotton poplin should hold its architecture; linen should wrinkle elegantly rather than surrender completely. Oversized is not the same as borrowed, and fitted is not permission for visible strain.
